gOS

I ran across this new Linux distribution the other day.  Based on Ubuntu, they call it gOS.  Awesome little OS.  I have the Eee PC 4G and this OS works perfectly on it.  Same curve on wireless install as Ubuntu, but once you get it cooking it works great.  I have tried no less than 4 different OSs on the Eee since I got it and this is by far the best.

Next up, I am putting this on the old desktop in the shop.

Another semester? Cereal?

So it begins yet again. Sometimes I think I am never going to escape this school crap. I SURE enjoyed the summer off though. While I could have been working on my thesis, I was doing absolutely NOTHING and loving every single minute of it.

I think I burned myself out last semester. Working 40 hours, doing 9 hours of grad school, and consulting the remaining time was not my idea of fun. Probably not Kory’s idea of fun either. I think I have decided I can handle the semester as long as I don’t have to go EVERY day.

I am 3 classes and a thesis away from the finish line. I am almost there.

Side Bar.. if anyone has any thesis or project topics, please send them my way. I was thinking along the lines of P2P or virtualization. I’m open to ideas.

Shop Finished!

It has been a whole summer long project, and it is finally finished. I honestly was under the impression that we could knock this thing out in a month, and boy was I wrong. The initial building permit was pulled on May 21st which was just a week or so after I finished the Spring semester. We finished the project exactly 90 days later. School starts Monday, so everything worked out pretty well time wise.

The shop was constructed by a local builder, and the inside was completed by my dad, myself. Brad loaned his help on the drywall. SHOUT OUT! He did a bangup job on the bathroom with his tape, mud and texture! Danny helped with the plumbing. He ran the sewer lines, and fixed up the in wall lines for me. He even offered to set the toilet and sink, but I didn’t want to push my luck. Dad and I wired the building, framed the bathroom, and ran the new meter base and subfeed for the house. I can’t thank my dad enough for all his help on this project. Poor dude was at my house more in the past couple weeks than he was at his. He’s awesome!

I never imagined the project would be so big, or expensive. I’m just happy it’s done.

Now on to some pics!

IMG_0368.JPGAnother shot of the inside of the bathroom. Notice Brad’s excellent texture.

IMG_0363.JPGShot of the inside. What do you know about that FJ with cruise and Sirius? Oh nothing? That’s cool.

I’m going to get some new outside shots. The grass has grown back in most places after all the construction, so it looks better now.

Sirius / XM

I’m actually surprised the FCC allowed this. Perhaps my Sirius stock will do something besides make me weep? We’ll see!

Ft Davis Bike Trip

What’s that? Hurricane Dolly is moving through the Southwestern portion of Texas on Friday? Oh well, sounds like a fun time to take a bike trip to the mountains!

Dad and I loaded up Thurs morning and headed down to the ol Fort Davis, Tx for the annual GWRRA bike rally. I had not been there since I was a wee tot, so I had no recollection of scenery or the town in general. It was a great time and we got some good riding in (when it wasn’t pouring rain).

This was the first long trip I had been on with the FJR, not counting the ride back from Austin when I bought it. With the added cruise control and Sirius Sat radio, it was all good on the road! I enjoyed the weekend with dad, and enjoyed all the riding, and even enjoyed the rain (for a while).

Here’s some pics from the trip.

Here’s the bike sittin in the shop Wednesday night, packed and ready to roll out.

We stop in Ft. Davis for some gasoleeeeene. $4.29 when we rolled up, $4.09 when we left. How often does that happen?

The Shop Build – Part 1

Two car garages are nice, but what happens when your toys exceed your space? It’s time to build a shop. For storage, for working, for whatever.

I have been suffering with a small 10×16 Morgan building for the past couple of years. It served it’s purpose well. I was able to store items, as well as have enough room to move around, do woodworking, fix hottub parts (oh you hottub…), and whatever I needed. But I longed for more. I still didn’t have a place to work on the bike or cars unless I pulled cars out of the garage.img_0185.jpg

So the planning began.

We determined a 24x24x10 was the biggest building we could fit in the backyard, and still have the Odessa city inspectors blessing. Here is where the shop will eventually sit.

Notice that tree stump in the middle of the roped off area? There used to be a tree there, and I don’t mean a small tree. I cut the tree down a couple of months in advance (before it bloomed) in anticipation of the summer shop project. Here is the aftermath of the tree cutting.
IMG_0072.jpgIMG_0073.jpgIMG_0075.jpg

Construction begins.

First, we had to remove the Morgan Building, and tear down the brand new fence I built not too long ago.
IMG_0187.jpgIMG_0189.jpg

Next, it was time to find and dig up the sewer and water lines (we’ll be adding plumbing for a bathroom in the shop).
IMG_0196.jpgIMG_0197.jpg
There’s the ol sewer line. Now we tie our new line in.
IMG_0201.jpgIMG_0204.jpg

Next, the building contractor brought his guys to do the form.
IMG_0199.jpg

And deeeeen…. time for some of the hard stuff (concrete).
IMG_0206.jpgIMG_0207.jpg

Now that we have concrete, I guess we should put something on top of it? The frame goes up.
IMG_0212.jpgIMG_0211.jpg

Then the building is finished.

Check back for part 2, as we build the bathroom, and wire the building.

Ron Paul plans his own convention

Maverick GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has booked an arena in Minneapolis for a “mini-convention” that could steal some of John McCain’s thunder just days before he accepts the Republican nomination.
